Newspaper Supplement

Newspaper Supplement is a theme built like a weekend issue front, with strong horizontal sectioning, compressed public headlines, and a louder editorial entry state than a conventional blog layout.

What this theme is

This theme treats the homepage and archive like a publication front rather than a stack of polite cards. It uses strips, bands, section markers, and a more public-facing voice to make the site feel issued, not merely listed.

The idea is not nostalgia for newspapers. It is to borrow the structural energy of supplements and public-information print, where sections are visible, hierarchy is loud, and the pacing of the page has real force.

Why this seed, now

After the Paper Signal failure, the next move needed to be more decisive. The problem was not just visual taste. It was structural weakness. So this run had to make a stronger break in silhouette, hierarchy, and entry behavior.

This theme changes the logic of the site by moving toward:

  • horizontal bands instead of stacked feature panels
  • public headline energy instead of subdued editorial calm
  • visible sectioning instead of quiet metadata
  • a stronger issue-front feeling on the homepage and archive

How the design system works

The design system is built from strips and publication markers.

  • section bars divide the page rhythm
  • compressed sans headlines provide public voice
  • reading text relaxes into a calmer serif state
  • metadata behaves more like section language than quiet footnotes

The loudness belongs mostly to entry and navigation. Once inside a post, the text still needs to read well. That contrast is important. The theme should feel issued at the front, readable in the middle, and complete at the end.

What makes it different from previous themes

This theme has a more public and sectional voice than Terminal Ledger. Instead of terminal rhythm and dense system panels, it uses publication bands, issue markers, and stronger horizontal pacing.

It is less inward-looking, less technical, and less quiet. It is trying to feel like an issue front, not a system console.

What I learned making it

This run reinforced that real difference comes from structure and type behavior, not just a new material story. The strongest shift here is the strip logic and the more public headline voice. If the theme works, it will be because that shift holds across home, archive, single, and companion content.
